Michael
has established a diverse and exciting career as a professional percussionist
and drumset player in Canada. Currently, he is a busy marching percussion
clinician for Yamaha Canada. Since Yamaha initiated their Start the Groove program with
Michael in 2008, he has conducted over 120 clinics from Halifax to Vancouver to
help start marching percussion groups at Canadian high schools. He has also
participated in educational conferences and workshops in Alberta, Ontario,
Quebec, and Nova Scotia. Michael is the composer and percussion head of the St.
Michael's College School Drumline in Toronto, and a consultant for several
additional scholastic drumlines in southern Ontario. Over the years, he has
composed and instructed for several drum corps and indoor drumlines throughout
Ontario.
In 2004, Michael became a published author with his first
drum method book, "The Mad Practice Pad". "The Mad Practice
Pad" is the only practice pad book available, and has been sold across
Canada and the US. Michael's second publication, the much-anticipated
"Developing Modern Drumlines", is also available and is being used by
numerous high school music teachers to teach their newly established
drumlines. Michael has extensive experience in teaching private percussion
and drumset lessons to students of all ages and playing abilities. From 2002 to
2009, Michael taught at the prestigious Soul Drums Academy in North
York, Ontario, where he had a waiting list of students. Despite the success of
his program at Soul Drums, he has since moved on to teach private lessons at
his newly-completed drum studio in Peterborough, Ontario. Michael is also busy
as a hand percussionist and drumset player in several rock, jazz, drum n' bass,
and R&B groups throughout southern and central Ontario. He has performed on
studio recordings for several artists, including the Arrogant Worms Beau Dixon,
and Paul McKay.
Michael's success is due in no small part to his education
and training from a young age. He began drumming at two years old on a plastic
Muppets drumset, and played in his first rock group at the age of twelve.
During his teenage years, Michael marched in a number of drum corps and indoor
drumlines. He was a DCI World Championships semi-finalist three times, a Winter
Guard International World Championship finalist three times, and the Canadian
champion snare drummer at age 15. Michael received a diploma with honours in
Performance Music from Cambrian College, where he was a percussion major and
vocal minor. His studies focused on classical mallet and Latin hand percussion,
as well as jazz drumset. Michael is pleased to endorse Yamaha
Percussion, Sabian Cymbals, and Vic
Firth Sticks and Mallets.
